I never got to attend an OEGlobal Conference until I started working here in 2020, and thus, my first OEGlobal conference was online. I was looking forward to going to Nantes in 2022 but alas I caught COVID shortly before and could not attend in person.

So I’d say my first “real” experience was 2023 in Edmonton which was such an exciting thrill to meet so many people that I had only known online. I found there and again 2024 in Brisbane that there feels like few barriers to being able to meet and talk to anyone else.

One of my favorite and recommended conference strategies is at some point in the schedule, chose a presentation a topic you think is far from your interest or experience; I find there is always something to be gained and learned in an interest area that is outside your usual scope.

Also, take every opportunity to walk and explore the setting. Find someone else to walk and talk with!

I fully respect everyone’s personal choice to attend in person or participate online, depending on what works best for them. Everyone’s situation is different, and these decisions can depend on access, resources, and most importantly, their safety and well-being.
