Looking back to an earlier post on the [Generative Adversarial Network( GAN)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generative_adversarial_network) generated images:

> Do you have questions where the openness of a resource is not exactly clear? Maybe it’s the case of content remixed from differently licensed sources, but [there is a matrix to help sort those situations](https://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/Wiki/cc_license_compatibility). Perhaps [it’s the case of the monkey selfie](https://www.wipo.int/wipo_magazine/en/2018/01/article_0007.html)? Post here an unclear licensing situation or share an example that seems to defy easy classification. If you respond, feel free to assert [IANAL](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IANAL).

that Wikipedia’s definition of public domain applied to [an AI generated image](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woman_1.jpg) in that article is declared:

> _This file is in the **[public domain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/public_domain)** because, as the work of a **computer algorithm** or **artificial intelligence** , it has no human author in whom copyright is vested._

but also noting in the footnote, that UK copyright law (in 2021) provided the 50 year copyright protection to AI generated images-- see [Artificial intelligence call for views: copyright and related rights](https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/artificial-intelligence-and-intellectual-property-call-for-views/artificial-intelligence-call-for-views-copyright-and-related-rights)
