This is an exciting request that, as a co-editor of one of the most widely read information science journals in Germany, motivates me to share the following Call for Papers (CfP) on this topic with this group. I would be happy if some of you from this list feel addressed and motivated to contribute a paper on aspects of OER and OEP. Contributions in English are explicitly welcome, and the special issue is not limited to the German-speaking world! Thank you in advance and best regards!
Call for Papers:
Open Educational Practices (OEP) – New Perspectives for Libraries and Educational Institutions
Open Educational Practices (OEP) refer to teaching and learning methods that promote open access to educational materials, pedagogical resources, and research findings. They are based on the philosophy of open sharing and collaboration and aim to make education more inclusive, accessible, and sustainable. Not only the materials but also the teaching practices should be open. OEP align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and contribute to creating a knowledge society where education is understood as a public good.
The upcoming issue of BIBLIOTHEK – Forschung und Praxiswill focus on this topic, which is increasingly shaping the educational landscape, from the perspective of libraries and educational institutions. The diverse perspectives and opportunities of OEP, as well as the role of libraries and educational institutions, will be explored. Our goal is to provide a platform for discussion and exchange on the opportunities and challenges of OEP in the library sector and beyond. The aim is to foster dialogue between the various stakeholders and provide new impulses for the further development of open educational practices.
How can libraries create conditions that promote and support the use, design, and management of Open Educational Resources (OER)? How do libraries and educational institutions implement OEP, what role do they play in providing Open Educational Resources, and how can they contribute to the creation of an open and inclusive educational culture? Additionally, the challenges of implementing OEP in areas such as legal issues, quality assurance, and sustainability will be addressed. Technological developments and platforms that support OEP, as well as the interfaces between Open Access and Open Science in the context of OEP, will also be highlighted.
We invite experts from libraries, universities, and other educational institutions, as well as from research and practice, to share their perspectives, successful projects, and innovative approaches. Contributions that show the connection between theoretical concepts and practical applications, as well as successful case studies and methods that promote the further development of OEP, are particularly welcome.
We look forward to your submissions in german or english and an engaging discussion on the role of libraries and educational institutions in promoting open education.
Contributions should be at least 10,000 and no more than 30,000 characters (including spaces). The submission deadline is May 15, 2025. Contributions will be published online following a peer-review process before the printed issue is released in November 2025. Submission guidelines can be found at:
