Cloud-based vs self-hosted messaging: Which do you prefer?

We previously used Google Chat for internal team communication, but over time we became concerned about recurring subscription costs and wanted more control over our data and infrastructure.

Because of this, we started exploring self-hosted and white-label instant messaging solutions that could be customized to fit our organization’s needs. Our goal was to improve data ownership, security, and flexibility while reducing reliance on third-party platforms.

We’re currently testing a self-hosted messaging solution and evaluating how well it meets our requirements.

I’m interested in hearing what others use for instant messaging and internal communication. Do you prefer cloud-based platforms like Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Google Chat, or do you use a self-hosted alternative? like Apphitect, Rocketchat, or MirrorFly. What factors were most important in your decision, such as cost, security, customization, reliability, or ease of use?

Hi Maam Kathirn,

I haven’t used self-hosted tools myself, but I currently use Slack and Discord. I find them both incredibly useful, especially when it comes to creating dedicated channels for different projects and just making daily communication easy across the team. Discord is also great if your team needs quick, drop-in voice channels.
