OER Under the Hood: An Open Pedagogy Approach to AI Literacy

In this next session of the OER Under the Hood webinar series in partnership with Pressbooks, we’re heading to the UK to spotlight how the University of Leeds is embedding openness and collaboration into the heart of teaching and learning.

To best inform our practices of integrating Generative Artificial Intelligence into education, what is a better source than the stories of how students themselves are using these technologies? Our featured project, Learning with AI, is an open collection of case studies contributed by University students from around the world. This project was edited by University of Leeds students and supported by a team of staff collaborators. It explores how students use generative AI as a learning partner and displays how open pedagogy empowers diverse voices to shape the curriculum itself.

Join us for a conversation with a professor in creative and open education, an OER librarian, and two students who contributed to this dynamic, student-centered project. A bug thanks to @chrissinerantzi for helping organize this session.

Learning With AI: A Student Edited Collection by University of Leeds

Learning with AI was designed as a “living book” and remains open for contributions from students worldwide until June 1, 2028. Since opening its call for contributions it has received submissions from 28 students across multiple levels of study and disciplines. Their reflections reveal how students are using AI as a learning partner: to clarify complex topics, engage in dialogic learning, support creativity, enhance accessibility, and build confidence.

We are excited to bring you this session highlighting student voices and perspectives on Generative AI. Thanks to @chrissinerantzi and the University of Leeds team- and as mentioned in the book, we featured this project in a live streamed session last year for Open Education Week:

The recording is available and I hope (hint hint) maybe we can organize a followup session at the next Open Education Week (March 2-6, 2026).

Also, I just listened to a relevant episode of Jeff Young’s Learning Curve podcast (recommended listening for those interested in AI) on " How Do Students Feel About Their AI Use? It’s Complicated"

We set up a table at the University of Minnesota and asked students to share how they use AI in their studies — and how they feel about the technology. Fear was the common thread — Fear of being caught, fear of not learning, and fear of AI taking away jobs or making their degrees less valuable. And in some cases the students shied away from trying AI tools even in productive ways, for fear of being accused of academic misconduct. This special episode of Learning Curve was co-produced with Ceci Heinen, podcast producer of the university’s student newspaper, the Minnesota Daily.
