Tip: Free Autodesk Educational Licenses for Students and Educators (Access Maya, 3ds Max, and More)
I wanted to share a fantastic resource for the community that is incredibly valuable for anyone teaching or learning digital arts, design, engineering, or animation.
Autodesk offers free individual educational licenses for its entire software suite to eligible students and educators worldwide. This isn’t a trial it is full access to industry-standard tools for renewable 1-year terms while you remain eligible.
To put this in perspective, this gives your learners access to Autodesk Maya, the absolute gold standard for 3D animation and visual effects in Hollywood. Maya is the powerhouse software used by top-tier studios like Disney, Pixar, and Sony Pictures Animation.
In fact, if you want a great example to share with your students of what Maya can do, it was the primary software used to animate massive blockbuster masterpieces like Disney’s Frozen, Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and James Cameron’s Avatar.
Giving students access to this software for free completely removes the financial barrier to learning high-end industry skills.
How to get it:
-
Go to the Autodesk Education Community page.
-
Create an account and submit proof of your educational status (like a school ID or enrollment letter).
-
Once verified, you can download Maya, AutoCAD, 3ds Max, Fusion, and more directly to your device.
I hope this helps expand the open tools and resources available to your classrooms!
To see a great example of how the software functions under the hood and why major studios rely on it, you can check out this guide on Why the Best Animations in the World are Made with Autodesk Maya.
