What are people doing with H5P and new DOJ regulations?

I see. Absolutely correct. That’s just not what I (as a developer) associate with the term “security” and that’s why I was a little confused  Don’t know how many people really use H5P for high-stakes exercises and how many students really fiddle with the console, but it’s an “attack vector” for sure.

Yes; “security” may not be the best term, but from a homework submission perspective, it works. We come across many in the community at our weekly office hours that are unaware of this since the formative nature of H5P isn’t emphasized (and should be). But that is a different issue than the accessibility issues I mentioned in this thread and how the community is to address the large corpus of existing non-accessible questions out there.

By the way, our office hours are open to anyone desiring information from us (on any topic including this one). They are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-10 Pacific time at https://zoom.libretexts.org. Feel free to stop by for more detailed discussions.

This is a great discussion! I am a bit late, but I just saw the post on the CCCOER chat. At Fanshawe, we work with faculty to build out their OERs. Most faculty want H5P and interactives in their books even though there are accessibility concerns. We create alternative formats for the H5P using a text generator tool that our developer created. It can be accessed on our App Hub AppHub - Fanshawe OER Design Studio . Then we use code to show only the alternative text in the PDF. This is just a workaround for now.

Very late to this, but Canvas/Moodle/Blackboard also have an interest in this. Anyone know what they are doing?

Hi Shauna,

The Fanshawe web app for creating alternative formats for H5P worked great for a few uploads I tried. When you say

Then we use code to show only the alternative text in the PDF.

Do you mean you use CSS styles to only display the text alternatives in the PDF versions? The folks at BCcampus have been doing this for quite some time for their many titles that include H5P, not only to address they accessibility needs of students with vision and audio challenges, but also the access situations where learners are using a PDF in a location lacking internet access, when the default is for Pressbooks to replace the H5P in print PDFs with a note and a URL.

Noted but maybe lost in the stream above, I was part of a BCcampus project to add the functionality to Pressbooks to automatically generate the alternatives in print PDF outputs. The changes are in line for a new version pending a few last minute fixing of issues, but has already been announced by Pressbooks so very soon it will be built into Pressbooks.

The real credit for building this goes to Oliver Tacke @otacke by creating a library for an H5P Extractor, see the proof of concept demo page which is ingenious as it can be deployed (and has been from what I understand) in other platforms.

Never too late for a conversation Josh! when you say

Is the “this” mean responding to the DOJ regulations in general or specifically about H5P? I’m not sure this response happens ar the LMS level, its something H5P should do itself (my opinion). Or re you saying they have a stake in this and perhaps can be convinced to step up support?
