Take a break for synthetic AI generated video and enjoy creative film making that use only media in the public domain. The Internet Archive just announced the winners of the 2026 Public Domain Film Remix Contest
These remarkable films not only reimagined and transformed public domain works but also demonstrated the boundless potential of remixing creative works to create something new.
They provide access to a collection of all 270 entries and in this post they share the winners, honorable mentions, and finalists. The “films” are under 3 minutes, so you can enjoy them without investing your entire evening.
Take a look and share ones that you enjoy (and see how you can use the share button to copy the code that can be pasted here to embed the film).
“Battle Lines” by Jen Zhao and Aaron Sharp portrays in playful documentary style, the relationship of painters Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg.
And I completely enjoyed the playfulness of Noel David Taylor’s “How’s the Play Going?” where the filmmaker (I believe) is wandering inside old film space as a confused time traveler.
Which remixes grab your attention?
