Juneteenth is today! A federal holiday for the United States but something we can celebrate/honor everywhere.
It is the “prompt” (non-AI flavor) for my favorite long time 14 years running creative outlet, the DS106 Daily Create with today’s being the 5271th on published every day, non-stop since January 8, 2012.
For moat of its run, Daily Creates were published every day to a platform who’s original name rhymes with “glitter” but since 2023 has been posting to Mastodon (if you are there search for and follow @creating@daily.ds106.us) But you can do them regardless of platform, so if you want to take up today’s challenge, share your response here.
It’s as simple as exploring the many exhibits and media from the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the suggestion to “make some art to mark the occaision” is deliberately wide open (it need not even be making art, it can be sharing).
So I did reply on Mastodon but for here., my response for TDC5271 is
Visiting Juneteenth music exhibits I was struck by classy photo of Richie Havens, remembering intensity (in hearing only recording as a kid) of Woodstock performance of Freedom, belted out playing an acoustic guitar.
But this cover of Here Comes the Sun says so much about covers as remixes as new art. I am mesmerized by his left hand movement over and under the fretboard on an energetic (and hope filled) Here Comes the Sun. Wow.
If the idea of doing some Daily Creates strikes a chord, for MYFest26 I am organizing ongoing participation by having all new daily creates posted to the event’s Discord channel and also scheduling a monthly “drop in and do a daily create session”.
