From Bold Idea to Global Legacy: 25 Years of MIT OpenCourseWare

A key reason for the OEGlobal 2026 conference taking place in Cambridge is aligned with a special milestone this year, the 25th anniversary of the invention of MIT OpenCourseWare.

Don’t miss this major celebration taking place April 8, 2026, in person and online.

Celebrate 25 years of MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW)—a bold experiment that became a global movement. This symposium brings together learners, educators, supporters, open knowledge leaders, and the MIT community to honor OCW’s extraordinary impact and to chart the future of open education.

Since its launch in 2001, OCW has empowered millions worldwide with free access to MIT course materials. This anniversary offers a moment to recognize the vibrant ecosystem that sustains open knowledge as a public good—and to reaffirm MIT’s mission-driven leadership in ensuring that high-quality learning remains accessible to all.

Join us for an engaging, dynamic, and celebratory program featuring MIT leadership, pioneering faculty, global learners, open education innovators, and philanthropic partners. Together, we will explore OCW’s legacy, its role in the evolving open ecosystem, and the opportunities and challenges ahead.

Countdown! The live stream for the MIT OCW celebration starts in just 8 hours. Who is going to watch or be there? I’m technically on vacation this week, but I would not miss this historic moment.

Our own OEGlobal Co-Executive Director Marcela Morales is attending in person and if I recall correctly Board Member Cathy Casserly is there too… I hope we can nudge @marcela and @cathcass to share some updates or remarks here.

Watch the live stream (it will be the recording later) and add your own real time commentary here. Make it an OEG onnect watch party.

See you in 8 hours!

Amazing in first hour. In the chat are greetings from all over the world- India, Tanzania, Brazil, Greece, Ethiopia, USA, Ecuador, Mongolia, Afghantistan, Uganda…

Welcome from Dimitris Bertsimas, Vice Provost for Open Learning at MIT who recognized the three co-founders:

Bertsimas:

When MIT opens the door on learning, the world walks in

Greeting from Curt Newton Director MIT OCW

Remarks by MIT President Sally Kornbluth

Charles Vest quoted in video:

“Open Courwware was not what I expected”

OpenCourseWare Stories https://ocw.mit.edu/stories/

Second half is a video “OCW @ 25: A Story in Motion” sharing the whole story of MIT OCW, expect it will; be shared soon on MIT OCW YouTube Channel (biggest edu channel on YouTube)

From the chat:

MIT OCW changed my life. Thank you from nigeria. Thanks for hope

Thank you, MIT, for unlocking the doors to world-class education and upgrading countless versions of ourselves.

MIT OCW, without any exaggeration, changed my life!

Thank you, MIT, for unlocking the doors to world-class education and upgrading countless versions of ourselves.

In panel discussion with three current MIT Professors- History professor Chris Capozzola declared

“4+10=16”

explaining this is math of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals or Quality Education (SDG 4) + Reduced Inequality (SDG 10) = Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG 16)

For reference, an OEGlobal Voices Podcast from 2023 with Curt Newton, Sarah Hansen, and Chris Capozzola

After the break, listening to Sarah Hansen moderating a panel of instructors and students, some in person, some via zoom, including former/current students Andrea Henshall, Hinata Yamahara, and instructors Elizabeth Siler and Dr. Victor Odumuyiwa.

Really insightful stories here, worth coming back to listen to recording (not taking many notes now).

Interesting observation from Sarah about all the speakers affirming the confidence building outcomes of MIT OCW.

Asked about surprises, Hinata mentioned being the only high school student in the panel!
