Monday Connect: Social Media Poll

It’s Monday, and I am overdue to write a new monday-connect post to try and draw you into clicking the reply button. Okay I was busy, and then sick with the flu, and then… (I could write something about excuses).

No, I am going to try another feature I like to use in this Discourse platform, creating a poll (anyone with an account can do one, look in the post editor under the + icon on the far right).

Today I am curious to ask those in this community where you devote your most time and attention in social media. Pick an icon from the social media platter.

I had intended to add a second question to allow you to check all the others you might also use, then I thought that was too much, but then @IslaHF asked for it.

Now let us know all social media places you participate in

  • Instagram
  • LinkedIn

I don’t usually think of Messaging Tools (like WhatsApp) or Youtube as social media platforms, so I didn’t really consider them in my answer… but I suspect if I were to pull up my phone app usage Youtube would be at the top.

I understand, I guess I am thinking of the messaging apps where people creates groups to share, it seems like the dialogue is not all that different… I dod a podcast today with a person who mentioned a WhatsApp group with 900 members!

But pont taken, thanks for doing the poll, Amanda!

RSS obvs how is that not even an option?

Because like you and me are about the only ones left who use it?

It’s a protocol, not sure it fits in as a social media “space”. Shrug. I’m usually wrong.

My “other” social media is Pearltrees.

Wow @Bronwen I forgot about Pearltrees, how do you use it? Can you share your collection?

I did my Wikipedia research to find out it was spawned back in 2007 and got media covereage in 2009. I was intrigued by this (Wayback Machine archived) post by its creator Patrice Lamothe on The Web’s Third Frontier where Lamonth described the founding principles of the web:

These principles are simply the initial objectives that Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Caillau stated for their project. Eliminating technical jargon, these objectives can be broken down into three general, universally applicable propositions:

1- Allow anyone to access any type of document

2- Allow everyone to disseminate their own documents

3- Allow everyone to organize the entire collection of documents

where you can see the number 3 was his reason/inspiration for creating Pearltrees.

It might be open to question now what all the platforms and methods shared are “allowing” now much later. It is not even too clear what we clump under the name “Social Media”.

Thoughts?

Hello @cogdog. Sure, I can share my collection, with the caveat that it’s not very well maintained. Sometimes I go through and realize that some of the webpages have been taken down or that I have duplicates, etc. Mostly I use it to flag webpages of interest. I started my collection about 10 years ago with the intent of keeping it dedicated broadly to instructional design, including topics of education, computer tools, communication, design, etc. Over time, a few other items have drifted in, but not much. Occasionally, I poke around out in the Pearl-verse to see what other people might have on a particular topic. I have only added a few to my collection—which is to say, I haven’t been all that social about this social media. Nonetheless, it’s a tool I have continued to use for ten years, and I continue to enjoy the potential of it. Here is my link: Mutableseashore | Pearltrees

Cheers!
