Offline discussion on WikiAfrica Hour

I know this community has had some fascinating conversations in the past about offline tech solutions for education. Thought that this might be of interest to some of you.

  • @Nichole_OLC is the guest host with
  • @Stephane chatting about Kiwix
  • Maxwell Beganim talking about the schools program they operated through Open Knowledge Ghana
  • Michael Graaf talking on behalf of Wikimedia Offline Projects
  • Tim Moody unpacks WikiMed and Internet in a Box

Tonight WikiAfrica Hour hosted a session on Offline projects within the Wikimedia movement … you can catch the conversation here on YouTube below…

Wow what a resource filled session! And it definitely aligns with the posts here by the efforts of @Rimit1 to provide offline internet resources via a pen drive.

I wondered when I clicked the video link why it started as Nicole was saying goodbye, it was the tail end of the live session! Now the full archive will play back.

The conversations about these solutions are helpful on connecting, yet I admit I’d really like to see some more demos or photos or videos that can show us what the experience is like for the learners and the educators. Is this anything we can coordinate for Open Education Week?

I definitely encourage the link to the Offline Internet Consortium as a key resource.

Would be good to see upcoming Wiki Africa Hour sessions (full archive there) in the OE Events space @IslaHF knows I have dreams of somehow aggregating event calendars!

Maybe an idea for Demo Wednesdays  But yes, good idea … I will approach the crew to see what we can wrangle together for OEWeek!

:rocket: Offline Wikipedia: A Game-Changing Session! :earth_africa:

The recent Offline Wikipedia session on YouTube was truly an inspiring and insightful experience! Watching the discussion unfold, witnessing the passion for bringing knowledge to everyone, anywhere, without the need for the internet, was incredible. I absolutely loved every moment of it!

I sincerely wish I could have been part of this session, but I’m certain that in the next one, I’ll be there, ready to share and explore even more cutting-edge technologies that will revolutionize how people access information.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making this session amazing! Your dedication and innovation are paving the way for a future where knowledge knows no boundaries.

:star2: Can’t wait for the next session—big things are coming! Stay tuned! :rocket::fire:

I agree @Rimit I just only heard about this event the same day it happened as my colleague @IslaHF is a part of Wiki Africa. I am unaware if they are planning more on offline internet solutions but hope they do. I am attempting some arm twisting, Isla!

We appreciate anyone organizing open education events to consider adding them to our OE Events space. but also more importantly to any going on now through the end of March, to place them on the shared calendar created for Open Education Week 2025.

Since you have been sharing your efforts here in OEG Connect for years not, Rimit, if there is a viable away for you to join via video from your location, I would be more than happy to organize a demo of the Pen Drive project on an OEG Live webcast as an event during Open Education Week March 3-7. I extend the offer as well to @danmcguire who has been sharing the related project work of Sopala.

To be repetitive, I am most keen to actually see a demo of the device and how it works for the teachers and the students, a live demo. It need not be fancy, even a mobile device that could act as a camera to show us the pen drive and the way learners interact with it.

I open up the floor for anyone else working on related offline internet efforts like the ones listed above (or others not included).

Reply here with interest or send me a private message via @cogdog

@danmcguire has shared some video that demonstrate the same Moodlebox platform used in the Sopala project

As well as a demo he recorded showing how Kiwix is integrated with Moodlebox for his recent project work

And for more my fuzzy memory recalled that we had Dan and his colleague Kathryn Kure @Erukk as guests on an OEG live streamed session in September 2023

Thank you for your message @cogdog and for considering my work in this space! I truly appreciate the opportunity to share my offline Wikipedia solution with a wider audience.

I would be happy to do a live demo of the device during Open Education Week (March 3-7) via an OEG Live webcast. The device is designed to serve Wikipedia in any language over WiFi, enabling access on mobile phones, laptops, tablets, and other devices without requiring an internet connection. This could be a great way to showcase how teachers and students in rural areas can benefit from it.

Let me know the details on how we can coordinate this, and I’ll do my best to make it happen. Looking forward to contributing to the conversation on offline internet solutions!

Best,
Rimit jain

its really very interesting and informative. this is the really in need for rural area for there development.

Thank you so much, Rimit! I am beyond overjoyed to create both an opportunity to meet but also to have you demonstrate/show us your offline internet pen drive solution.

Yes, there is some irony that you will need an internet connection to do this, but I like to imagine we can discover how the features can be demonstrated on camera for viewers to see how it works. I prefer to run these sessions more like a conversation, like if I visited your office, and we stood around your desk to see your solution, and we just got to ask questions or share ideas.

I will send you a private message, but will offer a time that is friendly for a workday hours in India. I am also seeking out anyone else, I keep nudging @danmcguire who might want to just be there or also demonstrate discuss a different platform. When we advertise, I will also suggest people on their own explore Kiwix or any other offline internet solution - anyone out there from World Possible to show RACHEL or someone who does work with Kolibri? (I can step in there myself, but prefer someone using it in a community).

This is exciting, Rimit, I send you my humble appreciation. Look for a private message very soon.
