Open Networked Learning - A course, a community, an approach

Open Networked Learning is an open online course on… open online teaching and learning, organized, if I read the footers correctly, Karlstadt University (Sweden) and Arcada (Finland).

The Open Networked Learning project has developed as a response to a growing need for courses dealing with the use of digital tools for teaching and learning. Further it is a result of educational developers looking outside their own universities to collaborate within their network of colleagues nationally and internationally. As our universities have included a clause about internationalisation in their strategic plans – this course is one way of living up to that in the form of internationalisation at home.

There’s quite a back story for ONL including that it is itself a remix of an earlier project between several European universities as the CC licensed Flexible, Distance and Online Learning (FDOL) course.

It looks like there is an offering of ONL252 starting in September 2025 over 12 weeks (see the course overview/outline)-- see the online registration form.

I spotted this via a mastodon post by @joergelp for a poster presentation at Germany’s Library Congress in Bremen. I am sure Jorge will answer questions posted here.

Who might be interested in taking this course?

Spot on, @cogdog, and thanks a million for sharing.

Everyone is welcome to join and let me know if anything is unclear.

Cheers,

Jörg

Thanks @cogdog@cosocial.ca and @joergelp@social.sunet.se. Looks to be a fantastic and relevant course. May be synergies with open online course Distributing education and knowledge creation to increase equity.

I registered my interest! Looking forward!

Hi Jörg! That’s great. And thankyou for tagging me! Let me have a look at it. There are so many things happenign at my end that I realised I was missing for quite a while. I need to apologise to Alan as well @cogdog for my ‘disappearance’.

Apologies are never ever needed, Ajita, for all that you contribute.

So do you think we could rally maybe a study group for ONL252 from folks here in OEG Connect? You could use this place to network.

Hi Jorg! Registered. Though I wonder how we will manage the synchronous sessions across the timezone. But I am excited and I am sure we will work out something.

That is a great idea Alan! But I don’t want to push you into managing something that I might not really not able to show consistency in. These days, there is just too much work, of different kinds and I really am not sure if I would be able to (though I would love to and I do read though not respond) contribute in the next few months as earlier.

Hah, I am feeling the same, so I am offering not to manage, just suggesting.

Fantastic news, Ajita!
Once you create an account on the ONL homepage in the Getting Started week, we ask you about your preferred meeting times (morning, afternoon, evening - all measured in Central European Summer Time). We group you then with folks with similar preferences. Has been working out pretty well for about 10 years now…
