Story Practices: An 8-Week Masterclass is a live, online course for people who work with story — or want to. Educators, facilitators, community organizers, librarians, therapists, social workers, health workers.

People who already sit with others through change and transformation, and want story as a deeper, more intentional part of that work.

The through-line of the course is simple: you cannot invite others into story without having gone through it yourself. So we do both — in sequence and in parallel.
The arc moves through four phases:

  • Knowing Story (Weeks 1–2) — where story lives in a life, and why this moment in history demands it
  • Knowing Story (Weeks 1–2) — where story lives in a life, and why this moment in history demands it
  • Making Story (Weeks 3–5) — voice, autoethnography, revision, the draft that surprises you
  • Facilitating Story (Weeks 6–7) — building the room, designing the curriculum Releasing Story (Week 8) — witness, completion, and what comes next

Participants leave with two deliverables: a personal autoethnographic narrative piece and a story curriculum designed for their own context.

The first StoryHost Masterclass with digital storytelling pioneer Joe Lambert!

I’ve had the fortunate to work many times with Joe Lambert and to say he is a master of teaching and doing digital storytelling is a huge understatement.

I was blessed too in the mid 1990s as a green horned educational technologist when my Director at the Maricopa Center for Learning for Instruction suggested I go to a digital storytelling conference (the perk was it was in Hawaii, those were the days). With some irony, my Director’s name was… Naomi Story!

At that conference I saw the Next Exit performance by Dana Atchley that changed everything for me-- Dana was Joe’s partner in the creation of the Center for Digital Storytelling. I dug through my memory and some web rabbit holes to resurface the 1996 Storytelling for the New Millennium Conference

I had some fun recently in a call with Joe sharing this experience-- Joe was at the conference too and added more details, but I do not think we even met!

All of this to say, if you can afford the registration I would recommend being part of anything Joe Lambert teaches or leads.
