What’s of interest? Climate Action Simulation

Tell me more!

The Climate Action Simulation is a highly interactive, role-playing game for groups to explore the different stakeholders and solutions that need to come together to take action on climate change. It is framed by the En-ROADS simulator, which allows participants to rapidly assess the impacts of different solutions to climate change—like energy supply subsidies, energy efficiency, or land use changes. The game is conducted as a simulated emergency climate summit organized by the United Nations to establish a concrete plan to limit global warming by bringing together government, business, and civil society representatives. It is a fun format for groups to explore climate change solutions and see what it would really take to address this global challenge. The Climate Action Simulation was co-developed by Climate Interactive, the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative, and the UMass Lowell Climate Change Initiative.

The Climate Action Simulation enables participants to gain insights into the factors that affect climate change and what the solutions and possible paths are for equitably and effectively addressing climate change and achieving the international climate goals. A publication by Dr. Rooney-Varga of UMass Lowell shows that taking part in the Climate Action Simulation improves participants’ knowledge of the actions needed to address climate change, boosts both personal and emotional engagement with climate issues, and leaves participants feeling empowered to address climate change.

Thank you Alan for sharing this! Anyone in the OEG community interested to learn more, please be in touch (cjnewton@mit.edu). I’ve been facilitating En-ROADS activities for many years, always engaging for people and a lot of fun to do!

I’ll add a few things:

  • The En-ROADS simulator and its support materials have been translated into 20 different languages
  • Two other ways we use En-ROADS in education settings are as an interactive workshop (20-90 minutes), and in a classroom guided assignment based on these short-form and long-form lesson plans. I was able to convince their team a few years ago to license the lesson plans CC BY - so please adapt and remix away!
  • There are over 800 trained and motivated En-ROADS Climate Ambassadors around the world. Please be in touch if you’d like support for an event at your school, your class, in your community. After my En-ROADS session at OE Global '23 in Edmonton, I know a couple of people in our OEG community have explored becoming Ambassadors themselves, with Climate Interactive’s excellent training and support program.
