Spanish heritage language education has moved away from deficit models that define learners by what they lack relative to monolingual or formally schooled speakers, toward asset-based approaches that treat learners’ linguistic repertoires, cultural knowledge, and lived experience as resources for instruction — yet instructional materials have not kept pace. Commercial textbooks, built for broad second-language markets, default to standardization and offer few openings for the local, community-grounded adaptation that asset-based pedagogy requires.
This article argues that Open Educational Resources (OER) — teaching materials that can be freely retained, reused, revised, remixed, and redistributed — are not merely a cheaper alternative but a means of enacting anti-deficit heritage language pedagogy, because their openness lets educators build materials around students’ actual repertoires and communities rather than around a standardized market.
Through a conceptual analysis integrating scholarship on heritage language education, open education, and multiliteracies, the article develops a five-principle design framework — linguistic legitimacy, cultural and community relevance, adaptability for learner heterogeneity, student voice and authorship, and open reuse. For each principle it specifies how open materials can treat learners’ repertoires as assets rather than deficiencies, and it considers what the framework implies for open and distance education.
The framework is offered to instructors, curriculum designers, and programs building materials that reflect the linguistic realities and identities of Spanish heritage language learners.
