NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning), is a joint venture of the IITs and IISc, funded by the Ministry of Education (MoE) Government of India, and was launched in 2003. Initially started as a project to take quality education to all corners of the country, NPTEL now offers close to 600+ courses for certification every semester in about 22 disciplines.

Some highlights:

  • Largest online repository in the world of courses in engineering, basic sciences and selected humanities and management subjects

  • YouTube channel for NPTEL – most subscribed educational channel, 1.3 billion views and 40+ lakhs subscribers

  • More than 56000 hours of video content, transcribed and subtitled

  • Most accessed library of peer-reviewed educational content in the world

  • Translation of more than 12000 hrs of English transcripts in regional Indian languages

NPTEL began offering open online courses in March 2014. It is now possible for ANYONE outside the IIT System to be able to do an online certification course from NPTEL and get a certificate from the IITs. IITs are reaching out and taking education to the homes of people through this initiative.

This came my way via one of my Google Alerts, and have to admit, I am a bit embarrassed to not know much about this vast open repository of courses and course materials, much in the information technology subjects but also math and science.

Course materials are provided in web and video format, all openly licensed, plus NPTEL offers a route for certification

Does anyone know more about this program? Or maybe willing to explore a bit and comment about the content you discover?

The world is so big, Alan states the obvious.

Wowza. Such an interesting rabbit hole. Thanks Alan. I have spent the last hour or two exploring and updating the Wikipedia entry National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning - Wikipedia

Have you heard of “ShodhShuddhi”. I hadn’t

No, I have given up on any pretence of knowing much!

It’s this one, right, for plagiarism detection? “167532 Documents Submitted in Apr '24” – that’s huge.

The name I got in Hindi is शोधशुद्धि translates by Google as “refinement” (?) Curious.

I know very little and keep on being surprised what I find in my own country. Discovered last week that South Africa has a state newspaper! Vukuzenzele! Of course, I wrote a wikipedia article about it!

Hey, be proud and share your Wikipedia authorship! This is commendable, Derek, I’d like to mobilize more of this quick action.
