Weaving Data is a beginner-friendly guide to transforming datasets into physical, woven artefacts. Combining 3D printing, textile tools and artistic data storytelling, this hands-on OER is perfect for creative learners, educators, and digital humanities enthusiasts.

This project aims to propose a more inclusive, empathetic, and personalised approach to understanding and expressing data—one that allows for interpretive, tactile, and artistic engagement.

In the following chapters, this resource offers an alternative approach to data visualisation by guiding learners through the creation of a 3D-printed mini-loom. Using a weekly sample dataset which includes mood ratings, exercise, and sleep quality, abstract data is transformed into a physical, visual and tactile object. The woven patterns created with the loom represent not only the data itself but also serve as conceptual tools for exploring the metaphorical and material potential of data in digital arts, design, humanities, and data science education.

This guide provides clear and accessible instructions on how to use 3D printing to fabricate tools and convert datasets into tangible woven artefacts. It is designed as a self-contained resource for educators, students, and researchers looking to begin working in this field.

This was a most exciting student project to come across, that has as well using a Pressbook to provide all the information on how to 3D print tangible artifacts that represent data.

I came across this via my Google Alerts for open education to the story from University College Cork Libraries projects by MA in Digital Humanities students, see the story for a photo of the mini loom in action.

The projects were developed as part of a summer programme funded by the HEA’s Strategic Alignment of Teaching and Learning Enhancement (SATLE) initiative and led by Stephanie Chen, Learning and Teaching Librarian at UCC. They were formally launched last week at an event opened by Professor Paul McSweeney, Vice-President for Learning and Teaching.

These new resources highlight UCC’s commitment to open research, student-led innovation, and community enrichment.
