What’s of interest? This monkey selfie will protect you from AI slop (BBC)
More details (Unless otherwise noted, this description is copied directly from the tagged web site)
What happens when something that isn’t human makes art? A series of bizarre court battles trying to answer that question centred around this image. Ultimately, it will influence what ends up on your screens and headphones forever.
This is one among many items I regularly tag in Pinboard as oegconnect, and automatically post tagged as #OEGConnect to Mastodon. Do you know of something else we should share like this? Just reply below and we will check it out.
I’ve thought about the monkey selfie a lot since AI grew more prevalent. This is also why our AI Declaration Statement is actually less about AI and more about documenting the human work involved.
I find it fascinating in that what was really almost a fluke accident where a photographer left a camera for the monkeys to “play” with created almost the precedent for the latest copyright rulings that will make it not possible for those who chose to generate media to copyright/sell it.
And absolutely yes, the KPU AI Declaration Statement remains such a valuable tool - for anyone who missed it, Amanda provided a live demo during Open Education Week
I am going to urge you, Amanda, or someone else, to nominate this for an award this year!
But back to the monkeys (Hey Hey, We’re the Public Domain Monkeys!) I was inspired to turn this into a DS106 Daily Create which will be published April 29 (the link will not work until then) to make a meme from the monkey selfie.
Just for fun, and as I am maybe the Worst Prompt Engineer Ever, I just asked ChatGPT for:
Create a selfie style image graphic style of the full face of a black monkey with a huge grin on its face.
That is really general, right? You might expect a wide variety of images returned, right? Look how almost a copy of the original it returned:
This image created by ChatGPT has no copyright because it was created by an algorithmic monkey.,
Is this really generated with intelligence?
This is among many reasons that they only time I will ever use GenAI for visual images is to generate something to mock GenAI, I will not use it for my real visual work.
