The AI+OER Institute 2026 brings together faculty, instructional designers, librarians, staff, students, and academic leaders to explore how AI and open education can support better teaching, broader access, and more responsible institutional practice. Across two virtual half-days, participants will engage with practical strategies, real campus examples, and timely conversations about accessibility, affordability, instructional design, policy, and AI governance. Whether we work in the classroom, the library, student support, or institutional leadership, the institute is designed to help us move from curiosity to action.

August 7: Robin DeRosa, Executive Director, Open Education Network
“Open Education & Artificial Intelligence: What Do They Have in Common?”
Robin invites participants to step back from both OER and GenAI tools and examine them through a values lens. Her keynote frames the idea of the “commons,” exploring where AI’s promise of democratization overlaps with open education’s equity goals and where the principles and platforms of AI may be working against those foundational hopes. This critical, generative opening sets the questions the whole institute will carry forward.
August 8: Susan Adams, Associate Director of Teaching and Learning, Achieving the Dream
“The Practice of the Commons: Agency, Authorship, and Open Pedagogy in an AI Age”
Picking up where Friday’s keynote ends, Susan brings the conversation into pedagogical practice. She argues that AI is putting pressure on education by positioning everyone as consumers of generated content, and explores what it looks like to design for genuine student agency: holding questions before prompting, protecting productive struggle, and treating curation as a core learning skill.
