Abstract

Over 18 months, a small editorial board realized their dream of sharing collaboratively-written case studies on open pedagogical practices through the online publication of Open Pedagogy Approaches: Faculty, Library, and Student Collaborations. With a metacognitive strategy at the core, the anthology was designed with open practices in mind, includes examples of open pedagogy along with respective OER documents to share, was produced through faculty, library, and student contributions, and invited an undergraduate class of writing students to apply their copyediting lessons learned to a professional publication.

In this session, presenters will share their motivations and goals for creating Open Pedagogy Approaches, describe the various open practices followed, showcase examples from the online publication, and discuss lessons learned. Voices from editors, authors, peer reviewers, and copy editors will be included.
Furthermore, presenters will share current activities for which this book has provided a springboard - new communication outlets, workshops, course design collaborations - all at a time when the world prepares for a new way of teaching–digitally, collaboratively, imaginatively, openly.

Open Pedagogy Approaches aligns with UNESCO Recommendation on OER. It addresses specific examples of “building capacity of stakeholders to create access, use, adapt and redistribute OER” and “encouraging inclusive and equitable quality OER.” Even though the book’s case studies originate from U.S. institutions, the range of types of schools and projects it illustrates can inspire models for global applications of open educational practices.
