OEG Fediverse Directory

We’ve updated the directory and have topped 100 Fediverse-present open educators with accounts here in OEG Connect. While there is much frenzy and excitement for Bluesky, and OEGlobal is pondering making a presence there, I/we are still committed to a Mastodon active presence at @oeglobal@social.fossdle.org.

We have right at the top of this topic a starter pack for you and we have been exploring some new tools seen recently that can batch follow like folks are doing in that bluesky place.

If you have not gotten a Fediverse Pioneer badge, please let me know.

To have your own fediverse handle added to the list, all you need to do is edit your profile to or update the username listed.

It’s still worth it to Get Federated

By request of @Downes and also a good idea, we just created a Mastodon list of this OEG Connect Fediverse directory (top of the thread).

Creating a List of the OEG Connectors in the Fediverse

You can download a copy of the csv file for this list at https://oeglobal.org/oegconnect/oeg-connectors.csv

To import this as a list in your Mastodon account:

  1. Go to edit your profile and find the place to import or directly to https://<yourmastodoninstance.url>/settings/import
  2. Select under Import Type Lists
  3. Under Data, choose the CSV file downloaded above
  4. Check the option for Merge so it does not overwrite any existing lists
  5. Click Upload

From your home screen, choose lists, and look for one titled “OEG Connectors”. In a column view this will open up a new column where you can see all the posts by people in the list.

Following Them All (Here is your starter pack!)

The steps above will not add these users to your stream, but if you would like to follow them all in one swoop, the steps are similar.

You can download a copy of the csv file for this list at https://oeglobal.org/oegconnect/follow-oeg-connectors.csv

To import this as a list in your Mastodon account:

  1. Go to edit your profile and find the place to import or go directly to https://<yourmastodoninstance.url>/settings/import
  2. Select under Import Type Following List
  3. Under Data, choose the CSV file downloaded above
  4. Check the option for Merge so it does not overwrite any existing lists
  5. Click Upload

Added later- wrote this up as a blog post (and then some)

For anyone still trying to figure out which Mastodon server to create an account on, perhaps go for one that represents your region, e.g. I’m on mastodon.au :australia:

That is helpful Ash. That’s why after my first two “homes” at mastodon.social (the logical place in 2016) to then social.fossdle.org where our OERu colleagues @Mackiwg and @lightweight offer a welcoming home, I moved to a Canadian based co-op cosocial.ca

A note that what makes Mastodon valuable is the ability to migrate and not lose your network. Its easy.

Going with a regional one helps if you want to tune into the locals server timeline, a definite means to find people to follow. Yet there are multiple approaches. Being federated means you are not limited to building a network from people everywhere. I can browse the mastodon.au directory and find people to follow. So many ways to build your own, not just have it handed out to you.

I very rarely look at my instance’s local timeline and almost never the global one, pretty much focus on who I follow. Again, the beauty of Mastodon that we can have different approaches to grooming/curating our own (plus creating lists, and following hashtags). rather than it being thrust upon you via algorithms.

Also recently learned the more you boost, reply to users outside your instance, the. better it’s search results work and hash tag stream returns behave.
