I am a Reference/Genealogy Librarian in rural Kentucky, United States. I am trying to advocate OER resources for adults and lifelong learners who live in the community. Prior to this position, I was employed as an Instructional Librarian at a private college where I assisted college students using resources for research purposes. Is there anyone on the #OEGlobalConnect who works in the public library areas? Thank you.
Hello and welcome @followaymicah! I am a former public librarian, then community college librarian, and now working at the nonprofit OEGlobal, leading CCCOER (my focus is community colleges in North America, but I talk with everyone). I’m interested in your question and am glad you asked it! I’ve heard of OER being used in public libraries, but in contacting my current public library pals on the east coast, I haven’t had any luck in finding libraries that are really honing in on the topic!
Hey, public librarians or those that know public librarians, what’s going on in the public world? There are at least 2 of us really interested in working with open education and the public ![]()
@followaymicah, also please consider joining the CCCOER Google Group/listserv. I would love to see your question posted there (I’m happy to do it, but would want to credit you and CC you). Here’s a link to instructions on joining: Community Email – CCCOER
Excellent suggestions @heatherb and I too would make a strong recommend to join the CCCOER listserv, there are many great librarians in the mix there.
I do know that in OEG Connect @peskorm has actively spoken of her work in public libraries.
I’d also recommend if you are not familiar seeing the resources from Library Futures who published a 2024 report on OER in Public Libraries
