What’s of interest? Self-hosted offline Wikipedia

Tell me more!

I am self-hosting Wikipedia offline using KIWIX. KIWIX is a free software that allows users to access digital content offline. They have a noble goal of brining knowledge to 3 billion people who cannot access the Internet either because of money or censorship.

Wikipedia is just one of the many things you can self-host. Given its flexibility, you can also choose different ways to install it on your local device. It has a native client that works on Android, Windows, and even Raspberry Pi. Because I want to run KIWIX on my NAS, I will not be using any of these. Instead, I have opted to choose the easiest path, which is running it using a Docker image. This tutorial assumes that you already have Docker installed in your device.

Thanks for highlighting Kiwix. It’s a very powerful learning tool, especially for environments where you can’t or don’t want to access the internet. And, there are some very talented people managing Kiwix.
As a classroom teacher, I always want to find out how well the students understand the content, which is where MoodleBox comes in. MoodleBox has all the same assessment capabilities as Moodle. One way to assess understanding is a simple quiz. Here’s a short video showing how to combine Kiwix with a quiz in MoodleBox

I need to dive more into Kiwix, is anyone here up for maybe an asynchronous activity during Open Education Week (Mar 3-7, 2025) where we can try it in parallel and share what we discover?

That’s my budge to you Dan, we hope we something on the calendar from the Sopala team?

PS for everyone. If you are sharing Youtube links here, we love ya! But you can do more than a hyperlink - in OEG Connect, if you put the web address of a YouTube video on a blank line, it will automagically embed! If you don’t someone like me might do it for you, but don’t you want that power of doing it yourself?

I was just in another meeting with Stephane Coillet-Matillon, CEO of Kiwix, who is interested in joining this discussion. I’m not sure how he would formally join OE Global Connect, but I’ve copied him on this reply.

That’s fantastic! We would love having Stephane and Kiwix be part of this community.

There is no formal joining process for

OE Global Connect is open for anyone to join, no requirements, just use the Join link at the top, or directly https://connect.oeglobal.org/signup

Well ask and you shall receive. I’m here now and happy to answer any question.

Welcome and thanks for joining in here Stephane. Please make use of posting news, resources of interest in this community space. And I hope others here take note of having Stephane here to ask about the features and use of Kiwix.

New it?

We invite everyone to take theanopportunity to learn more about Kiwix, the apps and ways you can use it, and the library of content that can be downloaded to use locally on a device when offline.

How did I do to pitch Kiwix and encourage people here to experiment with it? That’s what I intend to do- I have read about Kiwix for a while, but not yet tried.

Do you recommend a particular content item to try, Wikipedia is a big chink, maybe WikiVoyage?

And I welcome you to consider offering some kind of showcase or introduction event for Open Education Week happening March 3-7 this year? We just seek events people organize themselves to put into one giant calendar. The idea is to bang the drum loudly for at least one week to raise awareness of open education.

Thanks again for jumping and thanks @danmcguire for making the connection.
