The CC Zine is Out: Zines Are Cool

As part of it’s 25th year celebration, we spotted that Creative Commons has published the CC25 Zine with contributions from the open community.

The theme is “Remix is resistance,” and features creative works that reflect how remix, reuse, adaptation, and sharing challenge power, build community, preserve culture, and imagine more just futures. Download the zine and assemble by simply folding the pages in half and stacking, or read the digital version!

Take a look and let us know what stands out for you in the CC zine.

It must be something about zines today. I’ve seen and glanced casually at them before on the web, read about people like @VisualThinkery who have done conference workshopsm but have never looked close enough at one myself. I read a post today referencing artist and writer Becky Chambers with a zine perspective on AI (CC licensed) and decided it was time to print one out and fold/cut it following the wikihow instructions, so I folded my first one ever.

Oh and I found on Becky’s post a template for a single page cut and paste MS Word template to make your own zine (and noting that it will work in LIbreOffice).

So who else is into making zines? I spotted at the Vancouver Satellite event for last week’s OEGlobal 2026 conference that @Peter had set up a zine making station, do you have examples or more ideas, Peter?

Oops, I strayed a bit from the CC Zine, but that’s how the web flows.

The zine station didn’t get much use, BUT I was tickled because after the event while I was cleaning up I found that in fact, someone had created and left one!

It was unsigned, but very well-done.

I didn’t “get” zines until we had a gathering to make kits to hand out to neighborhoods where ICE was prone to showing up, that included a whistle and a zine. Oh!!! It made sense :slight_smile:

Right, it’s in the doing. Something about the tactile creation in limits of space. I’m ready for more!

What if we shared zines about why open? Or heck something mathy! The example I found is great because you can download it, fold, slit, and assemble.

Snork. Right now I’m working on explaining binomcdf on the TI-84 for stats students (tho’ apparently the newest version of the calculator makes it easier) and … it might be perfect for a zine.

I’m watching a great OpenEd Lightning Talk “Performing Open: Theatre, Zines, and Pedagogy in the Space Between” they are not yet public, but for reference see Resonance: A Zine Anthology from University of Virginia:

Resonance: A Zine Anthology is a collection of informational zines* created by undergraduate students at the University of Virginia studying voice and speech for theater. Topics include accents, singing, comedy, vocal health, breathwork, and more. This is a living book, where additional material can be added by future students. Performers, students, and anyone curious about the interplay of spoken voice and theater performance will enjoy looking through the entries of this anthology. *A zine (pronounced ZEEN) is a small, self-produced magazine that empowers anyone to create art and share knowledge.
