What Open Education Podcasts to You Know / Listen to / Recommend

Like many people I get as lot of value in listening to podcasts. I’m fiddling with an interesting way to create a collection of ones related to Open Education, and have a few I know of or found.

I’ve been making podcasts a looooong time and enjoy immensely producing the OE Global Voices podcast, even if my in house audience is less than enthralled.

Can you share the names / and links to any podcasts you know of that fit? We aer very very keen to find ones in other languages or parts of the world outside the Usual Places.

It can be a judgement call if it is a podcast is worth adding that covers other topics but opften if it can be labeled a podcast about Open Education, and we’d only want those if there is a way to group them by tag or category (if you are unsure just share a link and we will investigate).

Here’s a very short starting list I have surfaced - hoping the people like @greeneterry on this list can suggest others. A number of the ones I found have not been updated in a few years (looking at you Creative Commons, what happened to Open Minds??!)

A Few Open Education Podcasts

Dear Alan levin,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to follow up on my previous message, where I sent you the link to the Mayzab Digital Library, along with a profile and a video tutorial on how to subscribe.
mdl.edu.sd

The Mayzab Digital Library offers a range of services in e-learning, research, and training. The library provides access to a vast collection of digital resources, including e-books, articles, and research papers.

The video tutorial I sent explains how to register for the library by creating an account. This will give you access to the library’s resources and allow you to take full advantage of its services.

Best regards,
Wisal Alim

I mean I am a big fan of OEG Voices! My other faves are not focused on Open Education per se, but they are an act of open education by doing what they are doing. Those are: Accessagogy with Ann Gagné, focused on accessible pedagogy Episode – Ann Gagné, PhD and Pedagodzilla https://www.pedagodzilla.com/ " The pedagogic podcast with the pop culture core". I got to be a guest on the show where we used the Wu Tang Clan to describe online collaborative learning. So much fun.

I’ve heard all the episodes you were on and with Anne. I tapped into a few of hers. I do see it being problematic to classify podcast as being just about open education, I’m thinking of going broader like “open education adjacent” or “podcasts open educators listen to”

Classifying things is hard!

I’m waiting for the next Gettin Air

I better get on that!

I’m going to jump the gun since I asked them to share this, but here is a brand new podcast from our colleagues @AshTheLibrarian and @Mais “Speaking of Open”:

Speaking of Open is hosted by Ash & Mais, two passionate open education advocates who love to chat and dive deep on the diversity of open education work in Australasia. Join us as we chat with open educators, librarians, learning designers, and more to learn about their work in transforming teaching and learning in the unique Australasian experience.

The link is on Spotify but they have said it’s being added to YouTube as well.

Again, I am hoping to hear more open education podcasts of interest-- we are going to make and share a simple way to import all these podcasts to your favorite listening app.

Share your podcasts, please!

Thank you so much for sharing the pod!

It’s now up in YouTube here:

And also the RSS feed is: https://anchor.fm/s/1057719f0/podcast/rss

And this is it on Episodes.fm: https://episodes.fm/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8xMDU3NzE5ZjAvcG9kY2FzdC9yc3M?view=apps&sort=popularity

Thanks Ash! The real beauty of using Episodes.fm is when accessed on your mobile, you can than choose your app and add it as a new listen. I was able to add Speaking of Open directly to my Overcast app.

And I will be listening now in a few hours.

This is neat! It looks like OER Africa found this post useful and heck out their web page-- this is now open works, eh?

See / Hear the Latest Episodes

I have loaded all of the ones I found into theOEGlobal’s account on Inoreader the RSS reader we use for exploring the web. You can see the newest episodes that have been published from the podcasts we follow (this is basic in terms of display).

What’s On the List?

I generated.a list of the ones we have so far (RSS is the feed for each one that allows your podcast player to access the newest episodes)

  1. [RSS] Chalk Radio
  2. [RSS] Gettin' Air with Terry Greene
  3. [RSS] Inspiring Open: Amplifying the voices of Africa's inspiring women
  4. [RSS] OEG Voices
  5. [RSS] OKS – Open Knowledge Spectrums Podcast
  6. [RSS] Open Knowledge Spectrums Podcast
  7. [RSS] Open Science Talk
  8. [RSS] The OpenEd Podcast
  9. [RSS] Speaking of Open
  10. [RSS] Teaching in Higher Ed
  11. [RSS] Unsettling Knowledge Inequities

Subscribe to All in One Click (well maybe two)

That’s okay, but we can do better than this for sharing. Whatever tool you use to listen to podcasts very likely has an “Import” option, a means to import a list of podcasts to follow. It’s like a playlist of podcast sites, and uses a file format (stand back, here is the techie acronym) called OPML.

This means, you can add all 11 feeds of these at once, sample them, and then decided whether to keep them in your player or not.

  1. Download the current version of our Open Education Podcasts subscriptions from https://podcast.oeglobal.org/misc/open-ed-podcasts.xml and save it to your device.
  2. Look for a feature in your podcast player that allows for Import. Find the file.

That’s it! I know this works in my app, Overcast, but it should be available in others.

Make Our Lists Better

I spent about 45 minutes scrounging the web for more. I found a number of podcasts that were a limited series, so the audio is available, but you wont get new ones. Or ones that stopped posting – for example Unsettling Knowledge Inequities from Knowledge Equity Lab. Good stuff!

I found other sites labeled as podcasts but if there is no RSS feed, there is no means to subscribe to automatically get new episodes. They have audio, but you can only get it from the web site. Or podcasts that are just videos on YouTube.

I went deep into the catacombs and found a series from 2016 called The Other Fifty Weeks: An Open Education Podcast – these were audio files uploaded to OER Commons! I can’t find a web site, but I do note this series was done by @AdrianStagg our OEGlobal24 conference host. Hi Adrian!

I find podcasts that refer to getting episodes in Instagram or Facebook.

There’s much great content, but to me, a podcast is most useful when you can get the new ones loaded in your listener automatically.

Got Podcasts?

I would like to build up the collection, especially to find podcasts from other points on the globe. Do you know of any that should be added to a collection of Open Education related podcasts?

Mozilla’s IRL: Online Life is Real Life podcast is back with a new season which, believe it or not, is about AI!

How does artificial intelligence change when people — not profit — truly come first? Join IRL’s host Bridget Todd, as she meets people around the world building responsible alternatives to the tech that’s changing how we work, communicate, and even listen to music.

I keep finding more podcasts to add to the list.

The Engelberg Center Live! podcast is published by The Engelberg Center on Innovation Law & Policy at NYU. A previous season focused on datasets used to train AI associated with the Knowing Machines project, while the current season is a series about eBooks.

This “sounds” like a good fit. FInd the podcast at https://engelberg-center-live.simplecast.com/

Still looking for more podcasts, we have now 12 open education podcasts in the OPML/XML Subscription file
