How Far/Close Are You from/to Brisbane?

I’m here to stir up some noise here in the Interaction Zone for anyone interested in the OEGlobal 2024 conference, whether you are able to travel to be there in Brisbane or if you are following from afar. Here we recycle an activity from the 2022 conference.

Share your distance! This could be the map distance you might be traveling to be in Brisbane for the conference or how close/far from Brisbane you are participating via the AND Conference.

Use a tool like Distance From/To, enter your city/country in one box and Brisbane, Australia in the other this number, to get the map distance to share in a reply below (miles, kilometers, heck nautical miles, or convert to meters, yards, cubits you choose), and ideally a screenshot of your results.

Screenshot of https://www.distancefromto.net/ – apparently I have to go off the edge of the flat world to get to Brisbane!

For me, from home in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan Canada, I am 13106 km, 8144 miles from Brisbane. A since I put in in there, that is 13,106,000 meters (I can do that in my head), 14332896 yards, and wow, 28,319,662 cubits (with help converting) away. Not that I will get a direct flight, but…

How about you? How far away are you from Brisbane? Calculate and share.

Mine is a little closer…

The Proclaimers could visit :speak_no_evil:

Mine is a little bit far (LOL).

By the way, will there be any OEG 2024 participants coming from University of Illinois?

Ken

You look relatively close, Ken! I believe that’s just one timezone crossing for you?

I just did a quick check and am not seeing any presenters or registrations (yet) from the University of Illinois.

Mine is almost as far as yours Alan! But my trip will also go via Jo’burg and Singapore, so not as the Albatross flies in this visual …!

Bratislava to Brisbane is 15595 kilometers as the (hypothetical) crow flies but the actual trip is a bit longer (traveling via Vienna & Zurich)…

Also, TIL that Boston and Bratislava are almost the same distance from Brisbane. An isosceles triangle! :upside_down_face:

Quite a distance between my hometown Malden in The Netherlands and Brisbane

Close to Brisbane! I live ‘up the hill’ in Toowoomba.

Hi Julie, we’ve heard all kinds of rave reviews of life in Toowoomba.

Looking forward to seeing you at the conference, it’s been quite a long time since the Flat Classroom event in Yokahama.

Hi Alan - looking forward to seeing you again! Long time indeed. Toowoomba is a beautiful place, the ‘Garden City’. I have been here for 4 years and am nurturing a cottage garden with lots of roses.

Wow, this figure of speech is actually based in reality! (source):

Due to their unique flight mode (further reading about this can be found here) flight recordings have shown that albatrosses are indeed capable of flying up to 10,000 miles in a single journey and circumnavigate the earth in 46 days (here).

Nice easy one for me this time!

Just a hop, or maybe a decent trek?

Journeying down south…

Welcome down south (and east), Tara. I’ve been to Darwin, briefly, long ago. Look forward to meeting, safe travels.
